we remember the light on the hill

An Australian singer once sang this song:

So you cut all the tall trees down, you poisoned the sky and the sea
You’ve taken what’s good from the ground
But you’ve left precious little for me
You remember the flood and the fall, we remember the light on the hill
There should be enough for us all, but the dollar is driving us still

River runs red, black rain falls, dust in my hand
River runs red, black rain falls, on my bleeding land

So we came and we conquered and found
Riches of commons and kings
Who strangled and wrestled the ground
But they never put back anything
Now I’m trapped like a dog in a cage
Wherever the truth is pursued
It must be the curse of the age
What’s taken is never renewed

An Australian politican said this just the other day:

I thought the ultimate outcome of that forest agreement was not in the best interest of either the communities or the forests. But I accept that that was the outcome and we’ve supported it. Labor has supported it and I do support it as a Labor member and a Labor shadow minister.

I wonder how Mr Garrett really feels about his choice to become beholden to a group of people who seem to believe that jobs vs trees is a zero sum game.

The words ‘now I’m trapped like a dog in a cage’ have never seemed more relevant eh.

I feel for the guy, I really do – he was a fantatstic activist and a lot of people listened to and respected him and what he had to say. It’s a crying shame he decided to sell out and not only become a party politician but also a known god-botherer.

He must be loving the new uranium policy, too.

I would have more respect for him (and he’d probably attract more votes) if he were a bit more outspoken on other issues, or even did an Abbott – “my personal beliefs are different to party policy”. Unfortunately the ALP is so petrified of upsetting the poor dears in certain unions that he’s obviously been brought to heel in the lead up to the election.

Interestingly, the Green vote is at its lowest point for a long time. Maybe the publick perceive that the major parties are finally taking some interest in environmental issues?
