The Australian runs a ridiculous front page story which describes a poll showing an electoral disaster for the Government as “HOWARD CHECKS RUDD’S MARCH!!!!1!!!11!!” (NB: there may have been fewer ‘!!1!’s).
Independent (and very excellent) political analysis site criticises blatant pro-Government bias in The Australian.
The Australian contacts the author and advises that the newspaper is going [...]

This article from The Australian, entitled “Silencing Our Basic Freedom”, is compulsory reading for anyone who cares about the future of democracy in Australia. This blog is frequently critical of that particular newspaper, but on this issue it is fighting for an extremely important and non-partisan cause – the ability of the media, and [...]

Once again, the spin of the week goes to The Australian (link) – this time for Dennis Shanahan’s effort in portraying polls showing an electoral massacre for the Government as “good news” for Mr Howard and Co. As Peter Brent puts it:
Never before in the history of opinion polls have such diabolical numbers for [...]

Tony “Saddam has WMDs which can be ready to attack us in 45 minutes” Blair is using his lame-duck period between now and the end of June to whine about the media. In particular he is unhappy that there has been a deterioration in the relationship between the government and media during his time [...]

This little exchange says a great deal about why the New York Times is a truly excellent newspaper. When the recent plot to “blow up JFK airport” was revealed, the Times looked objectively at the story and decided it did not warrant hyperbole, hysteria, or even a front page story on its print edition. [...]

It’s pretty clear that The Australian has abandoned all pretence of objectivity or neutrality in its news reporting. This headline speaks for itself, really – but the opening of the “story” is just as good:
ACTU president Sharan Burrow has used her influence to blacken Australia’s name…

This proposal about reform of the way the board of the national broadcaster is composed is very welcome news – both in the context of ensuring that there is at least one relatively neutral and unbiased source of news and current affairs in the country, and more broadly for the fact that a political party [...]

This is the headline this afternoon from the ABC news website:

The headline is a reference to the proposal that Australia implement a carbon trading scheme to (finally) start doing something about our greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon trading works, in part, on the basis of charging businesses for the greenhouse gases they produce. [...]

Further to this post, Simon points to this fairly lengthy but fascinating excerpt from big Al’s new book.
Faith in the power of reason—the belief that free citizens can govern themselves wisely and fairly by resorting to logical debate on the basis of the best evidence available, instead of raw power—remains the central premise of American [...]

You may or may not recall that over the last few years, the federal government has carefully stacked the ABC’s board with right wing nutcases, including Keith “we never did nuffink to the Aborigines, it was like that when we got here” Windschuttle and Janet “Islam promotes rape” Albrechtsen. The ABC later dropped a [...]

Whether you’re left or right in a conventional sense, it’s worth paying attention to what Al Gore has been saying lately about the state of American – and by extension, Australian – politics. His new book, The Assault On Reason, is no doubt partisan in many ways, but it also focuses on some extremely [...]

Is the government doomed to repeat the lesson Paul Keating and the ALP received in 1996? This article is certainly cause for reflection: a summary of the major newspapers’ views on the parties leading into the 96 election.
For instance, The Australian (which didn’t back either side, oh how times have changed) noted
There is a [...]

Seemingly out of the blue, Australia’s main media outlets have actually agreed on something other than money and their desire for more money, and have got together to launch a campaign called “Australia’s Right to Know.” The focus of the campaign is the decrease in media freedom in Australia, and the perceived lack of [...]

Looks like I wasn’t the only one to notice The Australian’s little effort yesterday: Crikey ran a similar piece here.

Australia’s only national broadsheet, The Australian, is one of the best sources of real news and analysis in the country. Unfortunately it is also utterly biased, not only in its editorial section but also its news and features.
Today’s effort however, a vicious hatchet-job on Labor’s industrial relations policy as announced yesterday, goes above and [...]
